ITU-T Recommendations are critical to the interoperability of ICT systems, whether they exchange voice, video or data messages. Published as open standards, they allow to avoid costly market battles over preferred proprietary technologies, and create a level playing field for companies from established and emerging markets.

The recommendations cover a broad spectrum of topics within the telecommunications domain, including high-efficiency network infrastructure, multimedia mobility, IP-based television (IPTV), emergency communications and radio access.

Substantial number of recommendations is dedicated to network management, quality of service and protection of communication elements from cyber threats.

ITU-T has demonstrated leadership in standardizing emerging technologies expected to be in general use over the next decade, including Next-generation Networks (NGN), Machine-to-Machine Communication (M2M), Digital Financial Services (DFS), Smart Sustainable Cities (SSC) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
