ARC-IT Framework
CategoryTransportation Standards
Architecture Reference for Cooperative and Intelligent Transportation (ARC-IT) developed by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) provides a common framework for planning, designing, launching and integrating Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) deployments.
Intelligent Transportation Systems
ITS Deployment and Integration Planning
ARC-IT 8.2 has evolved based on a consensus-building methodology in accordance with legislative direction, and provides a definitive reference for ITS deployment planning. It also provides tools intended for transportation planners, architects and engineers to develop regional architectures and scope transit enhancement projects.
The framework includes a set of interconnected components organized into four views:
- Enterprise — identifies stakeholder organizations, their constituents and customers.
- Functional — defines functional requirements, business processes and data flows.
- Physical — defines software systems, devices and information flows between them.
- Communications — defines how information can be reliably and securely shared.
ARC-IT also holistically addresses security concerns spanning all four views, providing recommendations on how to sense, collect, process and disseminate information to improve the efficiency of moving goods and people, enhance the safety of the transportation system, and offer travel alternatives.
