Public Transportation Guidelines
Transit Operations and Communications Practices
APTA Standards cover every aspect of the transportation industry — from planning, designing, constructing and operating transit systems to the research, development, manufacturing and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
The standards outline the recommended practices for rail and bus service operations, transit asset management, passenger safety and security, and urban design.
A separate category of standards is dedicated to information technologies that can be applied to multiple transportation modes and facilities, which include:
- Closed-circuit Television (CCTV) — selection of cameras, recorders, networks and trainlines for use as part of transit-related monitoring infrastructure.
- Transit Communications Interface Profiles (TCIP) — mechanisms for the exchange of information among transit business systems, components and devices.
- Universal Transit Fare Systems (UTFS) — a uniform method for storing and retrieving information from contactless smart cards used in transit applications.
